This Friday, April 22nd, is Earth Day. The theme this year is Invest In Our Planet, and as we at Lovebug do things for the love of cats and the planet, we wanted to take a closer look at Earth Day and how we can all get involved.
The Origins Of Earth Day
Earth Day is held every year on April 22nd. The movement first began way back in 1970, when 20 million Americans came together to protest against the negative environmental impact of industrialisation. But it’s much more than just one day: Earth Day promotes a year-round commitment to action, education and diversity in the fight for our planet’s future!
The very first Earth Day is where the modern environmental movement began, and it resulted in huge changes to legislation in the US as well as the formation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. It showed the power people have when they come together to fight for change.
Now, more than 50 years on, EarthDay.Org works together with more than 150,000 partners in 192 countries to push for positive action for the planet. More than 1 billion people take part in Earth Day, which makes it the largest civic observance in the world.
Invest In Our Planet: Earth Day 2022
The theme of this year’s Earth Day is Invest In Our Planet, and there’s never been a better or more important time to get involved. There’s a whole host of events taking place across the world, and plenty here on our doorstep in the UK. You can also register events yourself!
One great way to get involved is to take part in an Earth Day clean-up. We all know that plastic pollution is a huge problem, so why not consider “plogging”? This is the term coined by environmentally-conscious joggers in Sweden, who have taken to picking up litter on their regular jogs! We don’t all have to keep up with the joggers, though—a gentle walk works just as well. You can look for clean-ups happening near you, or organise your own at your local park or beach.
Other Ways To Get Involved
There are plenty of ways, both big and small, for us to all invest in our planet. From cutting down on food waste to avoiding single-use plastics, many are simple steps that we can all add into our daily lives. Why not take a look at our 22 ways to live more sustainably? From composting to volunteering, there are so many ways to make a difference.
It doesn’t have to stop with just us humans—our four-legged friends can get involved too! They have an environmental pawprint of their own, and at Lovebug we’re making it easier than ever to be an eco-friendly pet parent! While we can opt for plant-based options and meat-free Mondays, our cats are obligate carnivores and need a protein-rich diet. Our insect-based cat food is nutritionally complete, and gives cats all the protein they need—without the environmental impact of traditional meat. It’s cat food that loves the planet.
And there are plenty of other ways to be a sustainable pawrent too! Take a look at our easy switches at home to become an eco-friendly pet parent.
